English Movie Shorts: How They Inspire and Influence Feature Films

The stories for the eighth Book Shorts Award had to be no more than 5,000 Japanese characters and inspired by Japanese folklore, fairy tales or novels. The winning piece is awarded with 500,000, gets translated into English and is published on the Book Shorts official website. The story will be given a special acknowledgement at the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2022 (June 7-June 20), and it may even be turned into a short movie.

Icarus Films is proud to present five newly restored early short film masterpieces from legendary filmmaker Alain Resnais (1922-2014). Resnais would go on to make his mark in feature films, including the Oscar-nominated Hiroshima Mon Amour, but these early-career shorts demonstrate an already keenly developed eye. The films are a remarkable compendium of the stylistic elements found in his features, and represent an important contribution to the distinguished French documentary tradition.

Parents need to know that this fantasy adventure from Spy Kids director Robert Rodriguez is sure to appeal to kids and tweens. Expect some mild insults -- like "lunkhead" and "this sucks" -- and potty humor, mostly regarding a booger (one entire vignette is devoted to the topic). The violence is generally humorous and fantasy based; most is directly related to characters' wishes (people transforming into animals, the above-mentioned booger becoming a giant menace, etc.). On a more serious note, the movie has several thought-provoking messages about bullying, family relationships, and technology.

Toby "Toe" Thompson (Jimmy Bennett) lives in Black Hills, a one-industry town run by technology tycoon Carbon Black (James Spader). Every day, Toby is bullied by Black's daughter, Helvetica (Jolie Vanier), and her crew of middle-school toughs. But life as Toby knows it changes when he's hit with a colorful rock that magically grants wishes -- big (a fortress) or small (never-ending supply of candy bars). But he's not the only one in town with eyes on the rock, and, as the movie's title implies, this tall tale is told in five interrelated SHORTS.

The relationship between a bully and the person she picks on is one of the movie's main themes. How is bullying portrayed? Do most bullies attack kids physically? What are other ways that bullies can attack?

A short movie, short film, or short is any movie not long enough to be considered a feature film (movie). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits".[1] However, the term is used by many as a catchall for anything less than 90 minutes in length.[2] A feature film or movie usually runs from 90 to 120 minutes but can be as long as 180 minutes.[3] There are other standards for short films. The Oberhausen short film festival defines a short as 35 minutes.[4] The BBC Short Film Festival, the Academy Awards, and Clermont-Ferrand use 40 minutes. The San Francisco, Uppsala, and Kraków are among those using a limit of 60 minutes.[4]

Short films or movies are sometimes called short subjects. Before 1910 all American movies were short subjects.[5] Another term used for short films is avant-garde or "avant-garde short films".[6] The term featurette originally was used for a movie or film longer than a short subject, but shorter than a standard feature film.[5] Documentaries are almost always short films. So are many training films.[7]

Short films are usually made by independent filmmakers and are not for profit. They are made with a low budget or no budget at all. Shorts are usually funded by film grants, non profit organizations, Sponsors, or personal funds. Short films are generally used by filmmakers to gain experience. They are also used to prove their talent in order to gain funding for future films. They want to attract private investors, entertainment companies, or film studios. Most film festivals show feature films or movies but also show short films. Some short films are shown along with a feature film.

Crypt TV is a YouTube channel absolutely loaded with brilliant short horror films of all varieties. Any die-hard horror junkie would be seriously mistaken to not subscribe and expose themselves to some of these seriously scary shorts.

One of the most underappreciated members of the channel's library is The Umbrella Factory, an animated, black-comic adaptation of The Monkey's Paw. Short, spooky, and stylistic, The Umbrella Factory is the perfect way to whet one's appetite before binging a series of horror shorts. But this isn't the only feature from Crypt TV to warrant attention.

If it's one thing Crypt TV does exceptionally well, it's creating memorable monsters with only minutes of screen time. One of the most horrifying and hauntingly beautiful creatures ever to step foot in a horror movie has to be The Birch. The Birch is a forest spirit brought to life by a bullied British schoolboy who reaps a gnarly vengeance on his tormentor, much to the audience's satisfaction.

For those wanting a more gruesome and gory affair from Crypt TV, look no further than the Look-See series of shorts. This collection of films will undoubtedly make the viewer's skin crawl. The Look-See creature himself is essentially Slenderman with razor-sharp teeth and a knack for making his victims disappear, usually in bloody ways.

Baily's voice work extended beyond the world of anime as well. His voice was featured in numerous video games, including the original entry in the Xenosaga franchise and in the Star Trek: Voyager video game, Elite Force. Baily also contributed to a number of American animated films, and is credited as part of the cast in movies such as Big Hero 6, Hotel Transylvania and Disney's smash hit Frozen. He also provided the voice of the Autobot Brawn in the 2018 live-action movie Bumblebee. His last credited role is in 2021's Night of the Animated Dead, an animated zombie film that was written by genre pioneer George Romero.

In this film about love and desire in Iranian cinema, which won an Ammodo Tiger Short Award at Rotterdam, depictions of intimacy and touch are prohibited. An affecting history of glances and hidden intimacies, this acclaimed short from talented British-Iranian filmmaker Maryam Tafakory (I Have Sinned a Rapturous Sin, MIFF 2018) deftly stitches together archival movie footage to create an experience that is emotional, sensory and intellectually rapturous. 2ff7e9595c
